Mastering Self Storage Staffing, Part Two: Training

The success of your self-storage business largely depends on your team. Well-trained and motivated employees not only provide top-notch customer service, but also play a vital role in maintaining your facility effectively.

Employees in the storage industry often have a great deal of autonomy and variety that they encounter day-to-day, making employee training critical to give your employees the tools they need to succeed.

With over 20 years of experience training self-storage employees, CSSM is happy to share our tried-and-true training techniques to take your employee training to the next level.

Top Employee Training Techniques in the Storage Industry

  • Create a consistent feedback loop. Employees thrive when given consistent and constant feedback, including what the employee is doing well, what they can improve moving forward, and how they feel about their performance and the position.
  • Build a relationship with your employee. When employees feel cared for and supported, they are more motivated to perform well in their positions. Making your employee feel welcome and a part of the team is a critical part of their beginning training and sets them up for success.
  • Create a one-year outline for your employee’s success. A detailed outline like this defines what Operations, HR, Management, etc, need to do throughout the year to check-in with the employee. This could include site visits, hands-on training, manager one-on-ones, etc. to make sure that the employee is confident and successful in the role.
  • Document the training process, including assessments, for the first 10 weeks. This can include specific items for the employee to learn, role-play, and test out of. Consider adding benchmark items for the first day, first week, bi-weekly, etc, until the 10th week.
